Description

Fig. 2
The NES-858 is a Kopp pattern root elevator with a 3.6 mm tip, designed specifically for maxillary root work. Among dental root elevator instruments, the Kopp pattern stands out for its focus on upper arch anatomy, where root angulation and bone density differ from the mandible and call for a slightly different approach to elevation.
Maxillary roots tend to sit in softer, more porous bone compared to the mandible, which changes how a clinician applies force during elevation. The Kopp design reflects that difference, giving the operator a tip suited to engaging upper roots without transmitting excessive pressure into surrounding structures. This matters most in the anterior maxilla and premolar region, where root fracture during extraction is a recognized risk if the wrong instrument geometry is used.
A 3.6 mm tip strikes a practical middle ground for upper root work. It is narrow enough to seat into the periodontal ligament space on single-rooted maxillary teeth, yet substantial enough to hold up under the repeated engagement that fractured or retained roots often require. Clinicians managing failed restorations, endodontically compromised teeth, or roots left behind after forceps extraction tend to reach for a Kopp elevator specifically because the upper arch is where it performs best.
Keeping an upper-root-specific elevator on the tray means less time improvising with a general-purpose instrument when a maxillary root does not come out cleanly on the first attempt.
