Root elevators as a category exist to solve a specific problem in extraction workflow. Before forceps can grip and remove a tooth cleanly, the periodontal ligament holding it in place needs to be loosened, and the tooth needs a starting point of mobility. An elevator does that work first, reducing the force forceps need to apply afterward and lowering the risk of root fracture or unnecessary bone trauma. The same logic applies to retained root fragments left after a previous extraction, where an elevator is often the only instrument narrow enough to reach and mobilize what remains.
