Description

Fig. 775/5
The NES-989 is a Winter pattern elevator built on the classic triangular, pointed-blade design that generations of oral surgeons have relied on for controlled root elevation. This is the left-oriented version of the pattern, made for clinicians who need consistent access to the mesial or distal aspect of a tooth depending on which side of the arch they are working. Among our dental root elevators, the Winter pattern remains a staple in mandibular molar and third molar surgery because its narrow, tapered tip can be seated into tight interproximal spaces without excessive bone removal.
The Winter design pairs a slim working tip with a handle built for torque rather than just grip. That matters clinically because elevating a firmly rooted molar often requires sustained rotational force, not just a push. A clinician who has felt a Winter elevator bind and then release a stubborn root understands why the leverage this pattern offers is different from a simple straight elevator. The pointed tip also allows for precise engagement along the periodontal ligament, which helps loosen the tooth before forceps are introduced and can reduce the force needed during the extraction itself.
This pattern is commonly reached for during surgical extractions of impacted or partially erupted mandibular third molars, as well as for root fragment removal when a simpler elevator cannot gain purchase. Clinicians who perform oral surgery regularly tend to keep both left and right Winter elevators paired in their tray setup for that reason.
