Sickle scalers work on a different principle than curettes, and the NES-1629 is built around that difference. Ground to the Towner-Jaquette Fig. U15/33 specification, the blade has a pointed back and two cutting edges that meet at a sharp tip, giving it a triangular cross-section rather than the rounded profile of a curette. That geometry is what makes sickle scalers the tool of choice for supragingival calculus — deposits sitting above the gumline, especially the hardened rings that build up around contact points and in interproximal embrasures where a rounded blade can’t get a clean bite.
The Towner-Jaquette design blends traits from two established scaler lineages into one working pattern, giving clinicians a slightly different reach and angulation than either parent design offers on its own. It handles interproximal calculus removal on both anterior and posterior teeth without needing a second instrument swap mid-procedure for most routine hygiene visits.
Beyond active scaling, it functions well as a diagnostic instrument, letting a clinician feel for calculus ledges and rough enamel surfaces before deciding on a full prophylaxis plan. Made from surgical stainless steel and rated for standard autoclave cycles, the NES-1629 keeps its point through normal use, making it a dependable addition to any general or hygiene tray.
