The Ochsenbin pattern (NES-3515, Fig.1) brings a well-established periosteal elevator design into daily oral and maxillofacial practice, built for gently lifting and reflecting the periosteum away from underlying bone during surgical access.
That reflection step is foundational to nearly every bone-related procedure, whether preparing for extraction, implant placement, or osseous surgery. Doing it cleanly, without tearing the periosteal layer, protects healing potential and keeps the surgical field workable throughout the procedure.
Among the maxillofacial surgery instruments used for tissue and bone access, the Ochsenbin pattern is recognized for a working end shaped to slide beneath the periosteum smoothly, minimizing trauma while still providing enough leverage to lift the tissue layer effectively.
As Fig.1, this represents the first configuration in the Ochsenbin line, typically the starting reference size practitioners reach for before considering other figures in the same pattern family.
