Fig. 3/4
Ceramic-coated handles are still a rarity in periodontal instrumentation, and the NES-1581 is one of the few Gracey curettes on the market built around one. This is the Fig. 3/4 pattern, designed for anterior teeth, mounted on a hollow Ø 9.5mm handle running 170mm, with a ceramic finish layered over the metal instead of the usual bare-steel or silicone grip.
The coating does two things a standard finish can’t. First, it cuts glare under operatory lighting, which matters more than it sounds like during long anterior scaling sequences where a clinician is staring at reflective metal for extended stretches. Second, it adds a slightly different tactile grip than polished steel, something many hygienists notice within the first few uses and either love or find takes a short adjustment period. The 3/4 pattern itself handles facial and lingual surfaces of anterior teeth, an area where fine control matters more than raw cutting force, so the added grip texture tends to pay off exactly where it’s needed.
Underneath the coating, the blade is still forged from surgical stainless steel, sharpens the same way any Gracey blade does, and holds up to autoclave sterilization without the finish degrading. Clinicians typically start with a diagnostic instrument to chart anterior pocket depths before selecting this curette. Next Edge Surgical finishes every NES-1581 to the same coating thickness and blade geometry across the batch.
