Before Gracey’s area-specific system became standard, McCall’s curette was the workhorse of periodontal therapy, and plenty of clinicians still reach for it today because its double-ended, universal blade handles more situations without a tray full of specialty instruments. The NES-1575 is the modified McCall pattern, numbered 11/12S, built with the same broad, slightly curved blade that made the original design useful on anterior teeth, premolars, and the facial or lingual surfaces of most posterior teeth without needing to swap ends mid-procedure.
Unlike area-specific curettes, this pattern’s blade sits at roughly 90 degrees to the lower shank on both working ends, which keeps the cutting edge engaged across a wider range of angles. That versatility comes with a tradeoff: it’s less precise on tight proximal surfaces than a dedicated Gracey pattern, but it’s faster to work with on generalized supragingival and shallow subgingival deposits, which is exactly why McCall’s design has stuck around in general dentistry and hygiene practices for decades.
