Reference charts in older instrument catalogs still list this shape as Fig. 23, and the NES-1403 keeps that classic University of Michigan geometry true to form. It’s a single-pattern probe rather than a combo design, which some clinicians actually prefer, since it means the balance point, taper, and flex never change no matter which end is in use.
The tip draws out into a long, gradual point that flexes slightly under pressure, giving it a softer feel against tooth structure compared to stiffer probe shapes. That subtle give is intentional; it reduces the risk of catching or gouging when tracing cementoenamel junctions or slipping past overhangs on older restorations. As a working diagnostic instrument , it’s often the first probe reached for during routine periodontal charting, precisely because that flex makes prolonged use less fatiguing on the wrist.
Handle configuration mirrors the rest of the NES probe lineup: a hollow handle in Ø 8mm or Ø 9.5mm for a lighter, more maneuverable feel, or a Ø 6mm solid handle for extra heft and stability in hand. All variants are milled from surgical stainless steel, finished to resist staining, and built to survive routine autoclaving without the point rounding off.
