Front-surface mirrors work differently than standard ones, and it’s worth explaining why that matters. In a typical mirror, the reflective coating sits behind a layer of glass — light passes through the glass, bounces off the coating, and comes back through the glass again, which can introduce a faint double-image or slight blur. Front-surface mirrors place the reflective layer directly on top, so light reflects immediately with no glass layer to pass through twice.
The practical result: a noticeably sharper, more accurate image — useful for photography, precise shade matching, and any situation where reflection fidelity actually changes the clinical decision being made.
At 20mm (Fig. 3), this diagnostic instrument is the compact option in this front-surface line, suited to posterior visibility and situations calling for a smaller head.
A few things to keep in mind: front-surface coatings sit exposed rather than protected behind glass, so gentle handling during cleaning helps preserve the coating’s lifespan.
